Wow this is fabulous ! Really gives you pride and joy to see Scottish translation of such a classic book. In well the best language out there obviously ;-)
I personally don't like it. I love Harry Potter - my friends took me on a Harry Potter walking tour of Edinburgh on my hen weekend - and I realise that all words were made up at some point but 'nummer fower'? Does anyone really write like that these days, except possibly The Broons? My Scottish husband keeps teaching our son the odd scots word and it just sounds weird. I do understand that some dialects still use some scots words such as 'ken' but I don't personally know of anyone who could read that version of the book and understand every word without looking some up. I’m not a Harry Potter fan myself I’m more of a Stephen King or Clive Barker kind of girl, but I can see where the angle is coming from. Many books and texts are rewritten for different languages such as Urdu and Welsh so why not Scots? who am I tell someone what they can and can’t not read especially in a language of their choosing, it’s up to them and it’s not hurting me in any. The question I will ask is, will all books start now to be published in Scots? if so I can just imagine Ian Fleming's James Bond novel Live or Let die. Th' british secrit service agent Jimmy bond is sent by his superiur, m, tae new york city tae investigate "mr big", real nam buonaparte ignace gallia. bond's targit is an agent ay th' soviit coonterintelligence organisation smersh, an' an underworld voodoo leader fa is suspected ay sellin' 17th-century gauld coins in order tae finance soviit spy operations in america. these gauld coins hae bin turnin' up in harlem an' florida an' ur suspected ay bein' part ay a treasure 'at was buried in jamaica by th' pirate sairrr henry morgan.
I am not a lover of Harry Potter myself but my daughter loves it so i asked her opinion and she said no mum it would not be the same. When we went o Florida last year i loved the harry potter rides though not the same thing i know but hey.
